It's been a busy morning on highways and roads throughout the state, where 54 crashes occurred since midnight, according to police.

Since early Monday, temperatures across the areas have risen to just above freezing. There may be a few slick roads due to earlier light icing, so drivers are warned to exercise caution.

Rain with pockets of freezing rain will taper off to spotty light rain as the morning progresses, the National Weather Service says.

Rain will continue into the afternoon Tuesday with patchy fog after 11 a.m. Temperatures could reach as high as 46 degrees, though wind chill values will make it feel between 30 and 40.

Winds may increase, with gusts as high as 26 mph, and the chance of rain is 100 percent. New water accumulations could be a quarter-inch to a half-inch.

Patchy fog will hover around the area overnight into early Wednesday, when it will be partly cloudy with temperatures dipping to 36 degrees.

Wednesday's forecast calls for more rain after 4 p.m. Patchy fog will stick around in the morning, otherwise the day will be partly sunny, with a high near 48. Winds will be light, and the chance of rain is 40 percent.

Rain sticks around Wednesday night, mainly before 10 p.m. It will be cloudy, with a low temperature around 39 and calm winds.

Finally on New Year's Eve, Thursday, the sun will re-emerge, with temperatures climbing to 49.
