Here's Next Chance For Snow As More Winter-Like Weather Pattern Returns
While there has been an overwhelming amount of news these days, the month of January has been relatively uneventful when it comes to the weather. But a storm system that brought mainly rain to most of the region kicked off the weekend with some areas north and inland seeing 1 to 3 inches of snowfall, with a few parts of New England getting between one foot to 18 inches of snow accumulation. (See image above for totals.) Now, meteorologists are saying a change in the weather pattern will lead to more winter-like conditions in the weeks to come. "Although major snowfall accum…

Polar Vortex Expected To Bring Major Shift In Weather Pattern, Several Chances For Snowfall
Following a stormy first few days of 2021, a stretch of dry, seasonable days is likely to continue for another week before a big change in the weather pattern with the expected arrival of the polar vortex. Located about 20 miles over the earth's surface, the polar vortex is a low-pressure system that leads to the swirling of Arctic air around the polar regions which unleashes cold air much farther south, including in North America. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said that "Once the pattern gets rolling, a major surge in heating demand is expected, and winter storms and l…

Snowfall From Merging Storms Now Expected In Wider Part Of Region
A wider part of the region is now expected to see some snowfall from a winterlike storm moving in from the Midwest that will combine forces with the remnants of Hurricane Zeta. The time frame for the merging storms is Thursday afternoon, Oct. 29 into Friday, Oct. 30, with the snowfall expected at times during the day and evening on Friday as the temperature drops. Accumulating snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. (See first image above.) South of the I-84 corridor, precipitation will remain all rain as the tem…

Snow Way! Merging Storms Will Bring Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds To Area, White Stuff In Some Spots
A winterlike storm that is dumping snow and ice in the Rockies and parts of the Midwest will combine forces with the remnants of Tropical Storm Zeta to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the region as well as snowfall in some spots in the Northeast. The time frame for the merging storms is Thursday afternoon, Oct. 29 into Friday, Oct. 30. "The setup for the Northeast will involve a fresh injection of cold air as high pressure will build eastward from the Great Lakes region spanning Thursday and Friday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll said. Areas farthest south will see th…

There will be more patchy fog after daybreak on Thursday, May 28, which will also be warm and humid with the high temperature in the low to mid 70s. There will be drizzle at times in the morning and showers at times during …

Big Change In Weather Pattern Coming After Stretch Of Pleasant Days
There will be a big change in the weather pattern after a stretch of comfortable and pleasant days. A surge of warm air and humidity will arrive later this week, serving as a reminder that it's still summer -- albeit late summer. Autumn begins on Monday, Sept. 23. We'll see dry and settled conditions in the area to start the week, as far north, Hurricane Dorian finally heads out to sea, moving off the southeastern Canadian coastline. The change will come at midweek thanks to a storm system moving into the Northeast from the Midwest. Here's a day-by-day look at what to expect and whe…

New Round Of Severe Storms With Downpours, Damaging Winds, Lightning Will Sweep Through Area
For the third straight day, a round of severe thunderstorms will move through the area during the evening commute. The storms will include downpours, lightning and gusty winds. Eye On The Storm: Latest Projected Track For System That Will Hit East Coast
As a winter storm from the Midwest nears the East Coast, confidence is increasing that it will primarily affect areas south of the tristate region. According to the latest projected track predictions, the steadiest snow will fall in the mid-Atlantic, with between 6 and 12 inches of accumulation possible in some spots. (See image above.) There is still a chance the storm could strengthen dramatically and turn northward, but there is now just a 20 percent chance of snow overnight Saturday, Jan. 12 into Sunday, Jan. 13 for downstate New York and southern Connecticut. Friday, Ja…

Weekend Snowstorm? System Will Move In After Midweek Gusty Winds Could Cause Power Outages
The winter has been marked so far by the El Niño effect. El Niño is a large-scale ocean-atmosphere climate interaction linked to a periodic warming in sea surface temperatures across the central and east-central Equatorial Pacific. It's resulted in warmer than average temperatures and below normal snowfall. But it's still January, so we are bound to see at least one storm soon, right? Seems likely, and there's a chance it could happen this weekend. But before then, we will see partly sunny and very windy days through the end of the workweek. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 could bring d…
