The back-to-back storms that will sweep through the area late this week will be followed by a blast of Arctic Air and an accumulation of ice that could cause power outages on Sunday. The first storm will come overnight Thursday night, Jan. 17 into Friday morning, Jan.18 with widespread 1 to 4 inches of accumulation, with the higher amounts farther north. Motorists traveling on the New England Thruway in Westchester can expect brief stoppages in traffic as crews begin a rock remediation project. The New York State Thruway Authority announced a rock remediation safety project on the I-95 in Westchester, which will require brief traffic stops beginning today. The New York State Thruway Authority has a simple message for motorists during the controlled demolition period of the old Tappan Zee Bridge. Stay away. The new TZB will be closed for up to an hour during the old bridge's demolition and significant delays are expected and motorists should avoid the area and take alternate routes, the Thruway Authority said. In the latest forecast by the National Weather Service, snow is now expected to start late Wednesday night, Jan. 2. A powerful storm will slam the area just as thousands hit the highways for pre-Christmas travel. Heavy rain, strong gusty winds, coastal flooding is expected from Thursday night through the day on Friday. Widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain is likely with locally higher amounts possible which can lead to flooding, according to the National Weather Service. Coastal flooding is also a threat. New snowfall projections have been released for a quick-moving storm that will sweep through the area Thursday. A total of between a 1 inch to as much as 2 inches of accumulation is now likely north of I-287 and the Merritt Parkway, with higher amounts farther west, the National Weather Service predicted early Thursday morning.
