Young Fairfield Runners Run Well At Junior Olympic Race

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Tomlinson Running Club, with students from Tomlinson Middle School and Fairfield Woods Middle School, were victorious in one age group division title and took second in another division at Sunday’s Connecticut Junior Olympic Cross Country championships in Litchfield on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Fairfield schools combined to bring 19 runners to the races, and many of them qualified for this weekend’s regional championships in Wappinger Falls, N.Y.

The 11-12-year-old boys won their division with 63 points. They won a tight race against the New Haven Track Club (68 points) and Wilton Running Club (71). The low point total wins in cross country.

Fairfield had three runners in the top six. Colin Agostisi took second, Charles Richard finished third and Kevin Harper took sixth. Austin Hochman (28th) and Patrick Eustace (46th) rounded out Fairfield’s scorers. Donan Meyer also ran for Fairfield.

The 13-14 boys finished second with 78 points. Litchfield won the race with 47. Ben Ertel finished 10th for Tomlinson, followed by teammate Alexander Mocarski. Christopher Leppla (16th), Cole Stearns (25th) and James Maniscalco (37th) rounded out Fairfield’s top five. Noah Igram also ran for Tomlinson.

Abigail Baisley finished eighth in the 11-12-year-old girls race, and Margaret Hutchinson took 12th. Megan Martin (26th) also ran in that race. In the 13-14 race Julia Eustace (seventh) and Margaret Wething (10th) also finished in the top 10.

Lauren Baisley was fourth in the girls 9-10-year-old division and Katherine Basley was fourth in the 8-and-under division. Both girls are elementary school students.

Leppla and Agostisi joined Tomlinson for the post-season after competing for Fairfield Woods during the middle school season. The team also includes two former Tomlinson students who are now high school freshman but have eligibility to compete in Junior Olympic events.

Ludlowe Middle School student Keegan Simonson ran unattached and finished 18th in the girls 13-14-year-old race. She also advanced to Regionals.
