Murphy, a native of Seymour, was the third Connecticut native taken in the draft Friday after Thomas Milone of Monroe, who was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays, and L.J. Mazzilli of Greenwich, chosen by the New York Mets.

Murphy was the Pioneers' leading hitter in his senior year, racking up a .367 batting average while hitting four home runs and 47 runs batted in and stealing 29 bases in 58 games played.

Sacred Heart lost to Bryant in the Northeastern Conference championship game, falling short of a third straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

Murphy also played for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League, where many future Major Leaguers play during their college years.

If Murphy signs with the Yankees, he will likely begin his professional career at the short-season A-level with the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League.
