There's a saying in track and field: "If you can't win, make the guy ahead of you break the record." Ian Wolff didn't exactly do that, but the Fairfield Ludlowe pole vaulter did manage to break his school's record in a meet at Wilton High School Thursday.
The senior jumper cleared 12 feet in finishing second to the Warriors' Ned Hemmerle, one of the top vaulters in the conference. That bettered the old mark of 11-6 set by Billy Greenwood in 2007 and equaled by Wolff last week in the Falcons' opening meet against crosstown rival Fairfield Warde.
"I'd kind of been stuck in the 11s, so it was nice to finally get to 12 feet," said a beaming Wolff after the meet. As a souvenir, officials let him take home the event scoresheet , which recorded his performance.
According to Ludlowe coach Dave Nulf, it couldn't have happened to a better kid. "Ian is a great athlete and competitor, with tremendous individual drive. But he also has a strong sense of team, and is always willing to help out in a relay, try a new event, or teach the younger athletes," said Nulf. "He's a classy kid."
