The Fairfield PAL Storm seventh-grade girls basketball team improved to 11-0 with two victories over the weekend, including a dramatic 45-44 win over UAC-Stratford on Friday. The Storm defeated Shelton, 36-19, on Sunday.
In the Stratford game, Leila Markovics basket in the final seconds lifted the Storm. Fairfield set up an inbounds play off a timeout with four seconds left and got the ball to Markovic, who scored the game-winner.
Fairfield trailed by double digits most of the game before rallying in the fourth. Trailing by two in the final minutes, Ashley Sabia was fouled shooting a layup in transition and made one-of-two to bring Fairfield within one to set up the dramatic ending.
Markovic and Sarah Cotto led Fairfield offensively. Maria Miller, Allison Whitlock, Kylie McCaffery and Sabia also contributed critical points during the late rally, and McCaffery stood tall against Stratfords imposing size.
The Storm are the lone undefeated team in the seventh-grade B division of the Fairfield County Basketball League. The team has also shown a flair for the dramatic, winning two games by two points in addition to Fridays nail-biter.
The Storm meets Redding on Saturday at Joel Barlow High School and hosts New Milford on Sunday at 1 p.m.
