The top girls skier in the state might not see a mountain for a long time when she's through with college. Fairfield Ludlowe senior Brooke Mackno has decided to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and will try to walk on to its soccer or tennis team.
"I made my decision after I spent three days on campus with some of the students,'' said Mackno, who won the slalom and giant slalom at the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League State Open championships. "I realized that these individuals share the same sense of responsibility, motivation and determination. Knowing that I would be surrounded by focused individuals who for the majority share a balance of athletic and academic focus, I realized that the Naval Academy would be the perfect college for me to thrive in both these academic and athletic areas."
Mackno also was nominated for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She is wrapping up her senior year as a member of the Ludlowe girls tennis team.
She will conclude her high school career with 12 varsity letters, the maximum an athlete can earn. Brooke is also a two-time member of the National Honor Society, a violinist, community volunteer and recreational athlete in kayaking, boxing, rowing and sailing. She also designs her own clothing.
