Sound Tigers Talk Sports to Kids in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Bridgeport Sound Tigers Russ Sinkewich and Matt Donovan joined 25 children for “Pucks and Nuggets” at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club to talk about their involvement in sports, from youth levels all the way to the professional ranks.

Wakeman’s Torch Club, a community service group of seventh- and eight-graders, coordinated the event. Garden Catering provided food.

The players spoke about the hard work and commitment it takes to become a professional athlete. They told the kids that over the course of their playing careers their parents made sure they had time for schoolwork and always made sure they played with sportsmanship and teamwork.

The children took part in a question-and-answer session in which they got to know the players on a more personal level. Sample questions: Who were your favorite players growing up, favorite food and do you get into fights on the ice.

“Most of these children admire these professional athletes that they see when their family goes to a game,’’ said Wakeman’s Ruben Goodwin, an advisor to the Torch Club. “It was great to have them give such inspirational advice to our local youth.”
