Jackson coached Warde’s baseball team for 25 years, and also worked as the high school’s athletic director and head of physical education for all Fairfield Public Schools. He was also one of the coaches who helped form the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
A Framingham, Mass. native, he moved to Fairfield after serving in World War II and attending Springfield College. He died in 1989 at the age of 66.
Jackson’s wife, Rita Bradtmuller, decided to start the scholarship “to promote baseball in young players and inspire good sportsmanship and values as Bob would have wanted, because he loved baseball,” according to a news release.
The Robert C. Jackson Memorial Scholarship will award $1,000 each year to a senior member of the Fairfield Warde High School baseball team. The candidate must also display academic achievement, athletic ability, leadership and community service. The winner will be announced at the team’s annual awards dinner each June.
