Sacred Heart Clubbed by Irish

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Notre Dame shot 61 percent from the floor and cruised past Sacred Heart, 106-65, in a men’s college basketball game Monday in South Bend, Ind. Jack Cooley led five players in double figures for Notre Dame (8-5). Shane Gibson scored a game-high 22 for the Pioneers (6-7).

Sacred Heart lead 30-23 with 7:30 left in the first half after a three-pointer by Steve Glowiak. Notre Dame then went on a 9-0 run before the Pioneers took their last lead, 39-37, on a basket by Phil Gaetano with 3:27 until halftime.

The Irish closed the half with a 9-0 run, and scored the first 11 points of the second half. Sacred Heart never recovered, as the Irish won in just the second meeting between the schools and the first in 10 years. Notre Dame is 26-0 vs. the Northeast Conference.

Norwalk’s Evan Kelley and Stamford’s Chris Evans had four points apiece for the Pioneers.

“We've got to play better defense,’’ Sacred Heart coach Dave Bike said. “They did what they wanted. Notre Dame is only averaging 10 turnovers a game and they helped their average by a lot. They only turned the ball over four times. We couldn't slow them down at all and they are good at that. They were better than us."

Sacred Heart meets Boston College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as it continues a three-game road trip.
