Running Group Helps Fairfield Mom Prep for Boston

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – “What’s said on the road, stays on the road.” That’s the motto of Fairfield's Kim Haney and her five girlfriends who took up running to stay in shape, working their way up to running marathons. But Haney was stunned to find out that she had qualified for the Boston Marathon.

“The stars aligned” for her when she ran the Cape Cod Marathon with her running group and finished in 3 hours and 44 minutes, Haney said. Boston did not even cross her mind until a few days later when she realized her time made the cut.

“Running is something that’s always kept me sane,” Haney said. “I never expected to run the Boston Marathon. I never thought that I would be a good enough runner to qualify.”

After months of running together, Haney and her racing mates challenged themselves to run a marathon. A disappointing finish for Haney inspired her to try again.

“I ran one marathon, and I thought that was going to be the only one I’d run in my life. It was a bucket list thing to do,” Haney said. “And when I finished, I said that can’t be the only marathon I do.”

She and the group set out to train for another marathon and came together for the 2010 Cape Cod Marathon. After Haney qualified for Boston, her friends were by her side to motivate her.

“I’ve been training for almost 18 months now, and the girls always come with me, even on long runs,” Haney said. “They’ve been a great support group.”

Haney, a native of Ohio, moved to Fairfield County after marrying her husband, a Greenwich native. They live in Fairfield with their twin 13-year-old son and daughter.
