The 5K race begins at 9 a.m. at the S.S. Norden Club at 4 Seabright Ave. in Bridgeport. Contestants run along Ash Creek and past St. Mary’s By the Sea and get a spectacular view of Black Rock Harbor and Fayerweather Lighthouse.

“For years, it was just a little neighborhood race,’’ race director Marty Schaivone said. “Not a lot of people knew about it. Eight or nine years ago, we moved it a week later. It’s grown into the mid 300s and runners really enjoy it. It’s one of the flattest 5ks you’ll get in Connecticut.”

A free race for kids was added this year, a one-tenth of a mile run at the finish of the course. Runners ages 70-and-over can race for free. Registration is available online.

“We have a lot of runners that have raced in it a lot over the year,’’ Schaivone said. “The guys who run from Black Rock kind of held it together for a lot of years. Now it’s more popular, but it’s not overwhelming. You don’t have to fight the masses.”

The race is the kickoff for Black Rock Day, which includes a small parade, a bed race and live music at Ellsworth Field. There is also food and drink from area restaurants, along with kids activities.

Complete information is available on the race website. Runners can preregister for $23 by June 8. Post-registration is $28.
