Recapping Softball Team's Perfect Run

A glance at Fairfield’s 9-10-year-old softball team run through district, section and state championship competition. The team plays Vermont Sunday at 8 p.m. in the first round of the East Region Invitational:

District 2 Tournament

 June 29: Fairfield 1, Trumbull 0: Brittany Romero throws no-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

June 30: Fairfield 13, Black Rock 10: Down 7-3 after four innings, Fairfield tied it at 7-7 in the sixth, 9-9 in the eighth, and added four more runs in the ninth. Brittany Romero scored five runs with two doubles, a triple, and a single.  Catcher Anna Rasmussen had five hits and three runs scored.  First baseman Shannon McCartney hit a 2-RBI double in the ninth to clinch the victory.  Maddie Russell added three singles.  Michaela O'Donnell pitched the final 4-plus innings for the victory.

July 2: Fairfield 11, Westport 0: Brittany Romero and Abrianna Natoli threw a combined no-hitter!  Third baseman Michaela O'Donnell hit two singles.  All 12 Fairfield players reached in this 4-inning, mercy victory over Westport as the All-Stars finished pool play 3-0 and the No. 1 tournament seed.

July 4: Fairfield 10, Westport 0:   Brittany Romero throws another shutout, this time allowing just two hits and no walks. Anna Rasmussen, Shannon McCartny and Michaela O'Donnell each had two hits.

July 11: Fairfield 2, Trumbull 0: Romero throws a complete game 1-hitter with 13 Ks and just one walk, and completes district play as the tournament MVP with a 0.00 ERA.   Second baseman Mary Rose Finnigan, shortstop Zoe Holderied, and first baseman Shannon McCartney also make the All-District Tournament Team. Finnigan and Holderied scored the games only runs on RBI singles by McCartney and Russell

Section 1

July 14: Fairfield 14, Darien 2: Romero, O'Donnell and Russell combine on a five-inning no-hitter. Romero fans five of the six batters she faces in the first two innings.  Holderied and Romero contribute three hits each.

July 15: Fairfield 6, Berlin 0: Romero throws a complete game no-hitter with 14Ks and one walk. Left fielder Kayla Bivens and catcher Anna Rasmussen had the only two hits for Fairfield. 

July 17: Fairfield 10, Seymour 0: Romero, Russell and O'Donnell combine on a five-inning no-hitter of District 3 Champion Seymour.  O'Donnell and Rasmussen each had two hits.  Holderied, McCartney, Romero, and Russell added singles.  Center Fielder Susannah Johnson scored two runs.

July 18: Fairfield 3, Orange 1: Maddie Russell allowed no hits or runs through three innings and got the win.  Romero came in after a fourth inning walk, and earned the save, in this two-pitcher no-hitter.  Romero's double on the first pitch of the game set the tone. 

July 22: Fairfield 1, Orange 0:   Section 1 Champonship Game. The Orange pitcher and Fairfield's Romero pitched an amazing game which went into extra innings tied at 0-0.  In the bottom of the seventh, just before both teams would have to remove their top pitchers, Fairfield was able to push a run across.  McCartney had a leadoff walk followed by a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Zoe Holderied.  O’Donnell a stepped up and delivered the first pitch to center field. Third Base coach and manager Dave McCartney elected to send daughter Shannon home from second on the play.  Shannon slid under the tag of the Orange catcher to give Fairfield the victory.  Romero threw a 7-inning complete game no-hit shutout with 18 strikeouts and one walk.  No earned runs have scored on Romero in either tournament.

State Tournament

July 24: Fairfield 12, Mystic 6: Romero, Russell, and Kayla Bivens each pitch two innings, allowing just two hits. 

July 25: Fairfield 16, Mystic 0: Romero (3 1/3) and Russell (2/3) combine on this 4-inning shutout for the State Championship!  Fairfield scored four runs in the top of the first inning, and the game was essentially over.  After scoring most of their first 11 runs with the help of walks, the Fairfeld bats were unleashed in the fourth inning, to add five runs on five consecutive hits by Rasmussen, McCartney, Holderied, O'Donnell, and Russell.
