Mackno, Mason Lead Fairfield to Ski Titles

Brooke Mackno and Jake Mason won individual races, and Fairfield's boys and girls ski teams captured Class L and State Open championships in alpine skiing at Mount Southington Ski Area.

Mackno, a senior at Fairfield Ludlowe, won the State Open giant slalom and slalom at the races earlier this month. She led Fairfield's girls to a 17-0 record. Lydia Brown, Kelsey Tague, Angie Walker, Eliza Wiant, Sydney Burton, Danielle Fisher and Lauren Craig also competed for Fairfield. Mackno finished second in one race in Connecticut all season and concluded the year by taking second at the Eastern U.S.A. High School championships in New Hampshire.

Mason led the boys team that also included his brother, Kyle, Ben Hawthorne, Harnish Dewar, Peter Wyckoff and Jack Zierolf. Jake Mason finished fourth in the boys' race at the Eastern championships.

Fairfield's teams had won state championships over the past few seasons, but it was the first time both teams won in the same year. The girls captured state honors in 2009. The boys were state champions in 2010.
