Ludlowe Set for Fciac Title Game

For the first time in Fairfield Ludlowe’s brief history, the Falcons and star outfielder Tom Nagy have reached the FCIAC baseball championship game, facing Greenwich at 7:30 tonight at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.

Ludlowe (17-5) defeated Westhill, 6-3, on Tuesday, while Greenwich (18-4) pounded St. Joseph of Trumbull, 13-4. The FCIAC title appearance is the first for Ludlowe and just the second in Fairfield town history. Fairfield High School reached the FCIAC title game in 2006, the only other time a Fairfield school played for the championship. Meanwhile, Greenwich returns to the championship for the first time since 2005.

Nagy is hitting .471 this season, third best in the FCIAC and has six home runs, second best in the state. Ludlowe has not lost at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard yet this season, defeating Fairfield Warde earlier in May in a rivalry game and then Westhill in the FCIAC semifinals.

According to Falcons manager Keith O’Rourke, the Falcons are peaking at the right time.

“Every team I've ever been a part of in my life has had highs and lows in the course of a season," O'Rourke said. "This team had a very low point two weeks ago and we made some adjustments. We aired out some issues that we had as a team and we started the ball rolling again.”

The Falcons have won seven straight and are hoping to carry the momentum into the state tournament. According to pitcher Steve Guasco, who won Tuesday's game against Westhill, the team expects to win the title.

“We’ve been playing really well. We are peaking at the right time. We beat Warde and got that off our back,” Guasco said. “We just hope to keep it going and get the bats swinging. We know we can beat anyone.”

Greenwich is led by Michael Dunster who has 26 runs scored this season, 23 RBIs, three home runs and a .460 batting average. Pitcher Ryan Carr has a 1.47 ERA. As a team, Greenwich has a .338 batting average, 14th best in the state and a 1.64 ERA, second best in the state, setting up a tough matchup for Ludlowe.

“Our bats haven’t really got going,” O’Rourke said. “If our bats get going and we keep playing well, we can compete against anyone. We hope to keep this going for the next few weeks and pick up wins along the way.”
