Long Island Holds Off Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Shane Gibson scored 28 points for Sacred Heart University, but it wasn’t enough as Sacred Heart fell to Long Island University, 87-81, in a Northeast Conference game at the Pitt Center.

It was the fifth straight game of 20 or more points for Gibson, a junior from Killingly. Sacred Heart fell to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Blackbirds are 9-6 and 3-0 in the conference.

Norwalk’s Evan Kelley scored seven points in 23 minutes and contributed four assists and three rebounds. Stamford’s Chris Evans added eight points, six rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes.

Sacred Heart led 69-68 with 4:26 to play. Long Island, which led by as many as 14 in the first half, went on a 8-0 run to go up 76-69 with 1:49 left.

Sacred Heart hosts St. Francis of New York Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Pitt Center.
