Little Leaguers Vie for Division Title

The battle for a berth in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., is underway for teams across the country, including the all-star teams from the Fairfield American and National Little Leagues. The squads, made up of the top 12-year-old players in the leagues, both compete in Connecticut Little League District Two.

Both Fairfield American and Fairfield National are undefeated. Fairfield American defeated Easton and Trumbull. The Fairfield National team defeated Westport last night 10-0 and Stratford and Trumbull last weekend. The tournament, which begins with pool play and then enters double elimination on July 12, is being played at Blackham Field in Bridgeport.

The winner of the District Two tournament will move on to a Sectional Tournament and then the State Tournament, where the 11 district champions play a best two-out-of-three series to advance to the New England Regional. The Regional is played in Bristol from Aug. 6-14, with the winner advancing to the national tournament on Aug. 20.

Four Connecticut teams have won the Little League World Series, most notably Trumbull in 1989, led by NHL player Chris Drury. Other champions were Stamford in 1951, Norwalk in 1952 and Windsor Locks in 1962.

Fairfield American returns to action next Monday against Park City of Bridgeport. Fairfield National next plays Bridgeport's North End on Tuesday. Both games are at 5:30 p.m. at Blackham Field.
