Gabby's Blog: Winning a Softball Title

Gabby Natoli of the Fairfield Little League Girls Softball team wrote a diary of her experiences during the team’s run in the East Regional. Here is her final entry:

Hey guys! Gabby Natoli here. On Friday, we went to breakfast – reluctantly, because it was early and we were tired from the game the night before. Then, we came back to our dorms and did what we usually did -- napped, read and hung out.

After an hour of napping we played hide-and-go-seek, which was really fun. Then we had yet another nap to prepare us for that night’s game for the New England title against Maine. When we woke up, some stayed at the dorm and read, played 'Life’ or watched TV. Sarah, Emma, Erin, Coach Dave, one of the volunteers and I played a game really similar to 'Taboo,' but called 'Catchphrase.' It was really fun, with the score ending up 2-2.

After that we went to dinner, then back to the dorm to change for the game against Maine. We were visitors, and the positions were Alice and Brittany pitching, Alice and Julia catching, me at first, Anna at second, Emma and Brittany at short, Mary Rose and Emma at third, Madison and Erin in left, Sarah in center, and Julia and Eliza in right.

In the fourth inning, Maine pulled ahead, making the score 6-5. After that inning we got really fired up and came back to score two runs to take a 7-6 lead. Anna had a key double that drove in the tying and winning runs.

After that inning, we held them, and the game was over and we were New England champions! We were so excited, we started screaming and hugging each other. But Maine fought really hard and they sure were a formidable team. After that, we went out for pizza and then to bed, excited that we had won the New England championship and hungry for more.

The next morning, we repeated our schedule of going to breakfast, napping, hanging out, napping and going to the game. Everyone was pumped. This game was against the Mid-Atlantic winner, New York, and was the deciding game to see who goes to the World Series in Portland.

We were the home team, and the positions were me pitching, Alice catching, Emma at first, Anna at second, Brittany at short, Mary Rose at third, Madison, Julia, And Eliza in left, Sarah in center, and Erin, Eliza and Julia in right.

Sadly, we were down by nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with us up at bat. Instead of giving up, we fought and scored five runs and loaded the bases with the tying run at bat. Unfortunately it ended there, making the final score 9-5, instead of 9-0.

We lost but we played a pretty good game, and New York was a really good team. Good luck New York in the softball World Series! Also, since this is my last blog, I want to thank all the people who put together this regional tournament -- thank you volunteers, thank you umpires, thank you program directors, thank you security, thank you cooks, thank you Little League for giving us this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Also, thank you Tom Renner and The Daily Fairfield for letting me do this blog, it was a lot of fun.

Lastly, I want to thank Mary Rose Finnigan, Alice Nelson, Brittany Romero, Emma Houghton, Sarah Cotto, Erin Rosengren, Eliza Elliot, Julia Wilson, Anna Rasmussen, Madison Buress, Coach Dave McCartney, Coach Jarry Rasmussen, Coach Doug Romero, Coach Ed Finnigan and Coach Casey Elliot for making this season what it was.

What an awesome team we were. Who would've thought we made it all the way to win New England champions. Without you all, I would've missed this awesome experience and would've been sitting around at home all day doing nothing. So thank you everyone. Peace out!
