FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A year ago Eddie Magi was thrown into a very pressure-packed sports situation for a 12-year-old. Sent to the mound to get the final out of the 2010 New England regional tournament, he struck out the only batter he faced, landing Fairfield American in the Little League World Series.
A year later, the hero of that game was with American in a different capacity. Magi and several other former Fairfield American teammates were on hand at Wednesday's state sectional opener against East Haven. Cheering boisterously, the "Nardone Nuke Squad" (so named for former ace pitcher Nick Nardone and his brother, Sam) hung on to every pitch.
"It's pretty special to watch them since I'm friends with a lot of them," Magi said. "We got this together through Facebook after they won the [district] championship."
Several of the Fairfield American alums now play for the U13 Fairfield Rage in an AAU summer league. Magi said the run to the World Series and his time on and off the field in Williamsport, Pa., are experiences he will never forget.
"I miss it. I hope they make another run like we did," Magi said. "Recording the last out to go to Williamsport and playing our first game there, which we won--it was all great."
