It was the fourth straight time Canada has won Olympic gold. The U.S. has settled for the silver medal in three of the last four Olympics, including the last two.
Marie-Philip Poulin scored the game-winner for Canada on a power play goal 8:10 into overtime. Meghan Duggan and Alex Carpenter scored for the United States. Brianne Jenner and Poulin had the other goals for Team Canada.
Fairfield’s Julie Chu, playing in her fourth Olympics, settled for another silver medal. She has three silvers and one bronze. Chu was particularly effective for most of the game in shorthanded situations for Team USA, which killed off six penalties before Poulin scored the game-winner on Canada’s seventh power play.
Team USA seemed to have the game in hand before Canada rallied late in the third period. Jenner scored with 3:26 remaining to trim Canada’s deficit to one goal. Poulin scored with 55 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Canada defeated the U.S., 3-2, in a preliminary round game at Sochi.
