Fairfield U. Lacrosse Fails to Win Tourney Berth

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team did not receive an at-large berth for the NCAA Tournament Sunday.

Fairfield finished up at 12-4, surpassing the previous single-season mark for wins (11). The Stags were ranked No. 16 in the nation, and two of their losses were to Loyola of Maryland, the No. 1 seed for the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament. Loyola defeated Fairfield, 14-7, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship game Saturday.

Denver (8-6), which Fairfield defeated during a regular-season conference game, was one of the teams to earn an at-large berth from the NCAA selection committee. Denver lost to Loyola, 14-13 in overtime, in the Eastern conference semifinals. One of Fairfield’s other losses was to Colgate, another NCAA team to earn a tournament berth.

"We're disappointed to not have received a bid to the NCAA Tournament, but understand the difficult task that is selecting the field of 16,” Fairfield coach Andy Copelan said on the Fairfield athletics website. “I'm proud of our young men for the season that they had and all that they accomplished. Our graduating seniors have plenty to be proud of, including setting the wins record in a season at Fairfield and leaving with 35 wins total.  Next year's team will have the challenge of continuing to compete at this elite level."

Two Norwalk men wrapped up their careers with the Stags. John Snellman finished the season with 33 goals and 36 points, while Brent Adams had 25 goals and 38 points. Adams was second on the team in points, and Snellman was third. Snellman and Adams were part of a senior class that won 35 games in four years. Snellman and Adams both played at Norwalk High.

Norwalk’s Louie DiGiacomo, Greenwich’s Stephen Dodd and Weston’s Kip McMahon also were on the Fairfield roster. The freshmen saw limited duty for the Stags.
