Fairfield To Host Paddling Event For Conn. Challenge

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Connecticut Challenge, which hosts an annual cycling fundraiser to help cancer survivors, take to the water next month in Fairfield.

Registration for the stand-up paddleboarding event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Jackie Durrell Pavilion at Penfield Beach, and the paddling starts at 9:30. It is the third year the Connecticut Challenge has hosted paddleboarding in addition to its signature summer cycling event.

Stand-up paddleboarding is exactly what it sounds like: standing on a board similar to a surfboard and propelling yourself on calm waters with a long paddle.

"We're excited about our third annual event and welcoming back our veteran paddlers,” race director Dave Keith said in a statement. “We also hope the addition of several race divisions this year will attract paddlers from across the region and followers of the World Paddling Association racing circuit. We hope the community comes out to enjoy the great new sport of stand-up paddling and to help raise money for the cancer survivorship programs of the CT Challenge."

The race will have two divisions, one for racers and one for recreational paddlers. There are three age categories for men and women racers: 17 and under, 18-49 and 50 and over. There are 3.5-mile and 6.5-mile events for racers and recreational riders alike.

Registration is $45 and all participants are required to raise a minimum of $250.

The Connecticut Challenge is a non-profit, founded in 2005, that creates and supports survivorship programs and research to empower cancer survivors to live healthier, happier, longer lives. More than $7 million has been raised to date to benefit programs for cancer survivors.
