FAIRFIELD, Conn. A new chapter in Fairfield softball history begins Friday night when its Little League team plays Swanton, Vt., in the first round of the Eastern Regional tournament in Bristol, Conn.
Fairfield takes the field at 8:15 p.m. There are three other games scheduled for Friday. All of the girls will participate in opening ceremonies beginning at 7:15 p.m.
Fairfield also plays Saturday at 4 p.m. against Massachusetts, Monday at 7 p.m. against Maine and Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Rhode Island. The top four teams from New England and the Mid-Atlantic Region begin single-elimination play on July 28. The Eastern Regional final is scheduled for July 30.
Fairfield got into the Eastern Regional by winning the state championship. It also won Section 1 and District 2 banners. Jarry Rasmussen manages the team, and many of the players were on the 10-year-old All-Star team that competed in last year's Eastern Regional.
The team is anchored by a pitching staff that includes Brittany Romero and Alice Nelson. Each pitcher won a game in the sweep of Mystic in the best-of-3 championship series. The rest of the team is Erin Rosengren, Julia Wilson, Mary Rose Finnigan, Madison Burress, Eliza Elliott, Emma Houghton, Anna Rasmussen, Sarah Cotto, Gabby Natoli and coaches Doug Romero and Dave McCartney.
This is the first time a Fairfield softball team has reached the Eastern Regional. It won its first Section 1 championship by defeating North Branford. It also won the District 2 title despite losing a pool play game to Black Rock, its only loss thus far in postseason.
The Eastern Regional winner advances to the Little League Softball World Series next month in Portland, Ore. Complete schedules, scores and standings are on the Little League Eastern Regional website.
