Prep, the defending State Open champion, finished with 217 points. Prep’s other scorers included Andrew Thane (44th), James Mulliken (80th), Scott Ball (100th) and Alec Hilton (104th). Matthew Scholl and Raphael Kinney were Prep’s other runners. New Milford won the team crown, while Staples’ Henry Wynne won the overall race.
Fairfield Warde’s boys finished 18th, led by Aidan Fiol’s 27th place finish.
Allen, the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Class L champion, warmed up well. “She just had an off day,’’ coach Tim Foster said. “For the most part, it seemed like things were going all right. It just wasn’t there.”
The race was delayed two days because of Hurricane Sandy. While it seemed to help some runners, it seemed to hurt others. “It’s hard to say what effect it had,’’ Foster said. “Our school wasn’t the only one that faced adversity. Danbury’s boys were the top-ranked team in the state all year, and they finished eighth. If that doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what does.”
The race capped a strong season for the Warde teams. It was the first time both qualified for the Open in the same year.
“You don’t like the class meet to be the apex of your season, but that’s the way it played out,’’ Foster said. “I give the kids a lot of credit for what they did this season. It was a rough day, but I was very proud of the effort they put in.”
