Fairfield Prep Skates To State Hockey Title

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield Prep's hockey team became the state Division 1 champions by defeating Notre Dame of West Haven, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Ingalls Rink in New Haven.

The top-ranked Jesuits scored one goal in each period of the championship game of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Matt Wikman scored in the first period with assists from Sean Henry and David White. In the second period, Michael Ventricelli scored with an assist from Tim Edmonds. 

Wikman came back in the third with the winning goal, scored with assists from Dean Lockery and White. Goalie Matt Beck had 20 saves in the winning effort.

This was the Jesuits third win over Notre Dame this season. They topped the No. 2-seeded team 3-1 on the road in January and 1-0 at home last month.

Fairfield Prep has now won eight titles since 2000 and 15 overall. The Jesuits have beaten Notre Dame four times in championship games. 

Fairfield Prep finished the year at 22-1-0. The team's only loss came Feb. 20 to Catholic Memorial of Roxbury, Mass.
