Fairfield Prep Reaches Hockey Title Game

The road to the Division I boys hockey championship always goes through Fairfield Prep. After Wednesday's 4-1 win over South Windsor, the Jesuits look to be in the driver's seat for their fifth state title since 2004.

Bryan Puffer, David White, David Griffin and Donald Carnicky scored goals as No. 2 Prep cruised past No. 3 South Windsor at Ingalls Rink. Goalie John Galiani stopped 29 shots for Prep, which will meet No. 4 St. Joseph in Saturday's Division I championship game at Ingalls. Game time is 2 p.m.

Prep has been a fixture in the championship game. This will be the eighth time since 2000 that Prep has played for the title. It lost in last year's final, 6-5, to Hamden. Prep defeated neighborhood rival Notre Dame of Fairfield for back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.

Prep built a 2-1 lead after the first period and led 3-1 heading into the third. Carnicky's power play goal late in the third period sealed the victory for Prep, which has won 13 of its last 14 games. The Jesuits survived a scare from Darien in its state tournament opener, winning in overtime 2-1 before pounding Hamden, 5-2, in the quarterfinals.

St. Joseph was the runner-up in Division II last year to Amity, and won the Division III title in 2009 by beating Staples-Weston, 3-2, in double overtime.
