Fairfield Prep was staring at 14-point deficit three minutes into Saturday's Class LL boys basketball championship game against St. Joseph. The Jesuits never recovered.
The No. 2 Cadets went on to beat No. 9 Prep, 79-53, at Mohegan Sun Arena. Prep finishes the season at 21-6.
Oscar Assie scored 17 points to pace St. Joseph (23-2). Timajh Parker added 15, while Brandon Jones (13) and Jake Fulton (10) also reached double figures. Robbie Bier scored 11 points for Prep, and Terry Tarpey had 10.
St. Joseph led 27-9 after the first quarter and 48-28 at halftime. It took its largest lead at 63-32 with 4:00 to play in the third quarter on a basket by Assie.
St. Joseph set the tempo in the first few minutes. Parker scored three quick points, and Brandon Jones, Jake Fulton and James Jennings hit three-pointers to spark the early run by the Cadets. Prep missed five of its first six shots and shot just 17-for-50 for the game. St. Joseph shot 31-for-61 for the field, 51 percent, and also had 46-28 rebounding advantage. Parker had 15 rebounds for St. Joseph.
The defeat ended one of the best seasons in Fairfield Prep history and for first-year coach Leo Redgate. The Jesuits defeated East Hartford, Crosby, Xavier and Ridgefield to reach its first final since beating Norwalk for the state title in 1997. Prep also won the state championship in 1969.
