Fairfield Prep Basketball, Hockey Both Make State Finals

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Both the Fairfield Prep basketball and hockey teams won their semifinal match-ups to advance to the state championships for the second time in three years.

Prep’s basketball team advanced to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class LL championship with a 78-75 win over No. 5-seeded East Hartford on Tuesday night. The No. 1-ranked Jesuits will face No. 2 Hillhouse for the league title Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Saturday’s final will be the fourth match-up between Prep and Hillhouse this season. Prep lost the first battle, 59-44, in Fairfield on Jan. 25. In the rematch in New Haven, the Jesuits dealt Hillhouse its only loss this season with a 57-52 win Feb. 5. Hillhouse then beat Prep in double overtime in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship game.

In hockey, Prep earned a trip to the CIAC Division I final with a 4-1 win over Ridgefield on Wednesday. The top-ranked Jesuit face defending champion Notre Dame-West Haven in the championship Tuesday night in New Haven.

Fairfield Prep has not lost to an opponent from Connecticut this season. Its only loss came Feb. 20 to Catholic Memorial of Roxbury, Mass. The Jesuits have already posted two wins against No. 2-seeded Notre Dame this season, winning 3-1 on the road in January and 1-0 at home last month.

Prep last sent both its basketball and hockey teams to the championships in 2011. In that year, the hockey Jesuits defeated St. Joseph’s, 5-0, while the basketball team lost, 79-53, also to St. Joseph’s.
