Roll Past Norwalk

The Fairfield PAL Hoyas made it to the seventh-grade championship game in the B Division of the Fairfield County Basketball League last winter. Coach Dwight Vaughn is hoping to take them a few steps farther this year.

The Hoyas looked strong Sunday, beating the Norwalk Biddy team, 62-49, behind 16 points from Chris Smaldone. Jared Collier added 14 for the Hoyas, who built a big second half lead before coasting home.

"We're trying to put this team on another level,'' Vaughn said. "We lost in the championship last year to St. Theresa [Trumbull], and we're trying to see if we can step up a level in competition."

This season, the Hoyas (2-2) already have lost to St. Theresa, 45-37, and to Ridgefield, 43-39, in a non-league game on Saturday. With wins over Redding and Norwalk, Vaughn believes his team can make a run in the league.

"They're a coachable group and they work hard,'' said Vaughn, who formerly played at Norwalk Community College.

The Hoyas play Saturday against Madison and Sunday at home against Westport.
