FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Darien and Fairfield softball All-Star teams begin play in the Section 1 tournament Thursday at Unity Park in Trumbull. Both teams advanced to the sectional by winning district titles earlier this week.
Fairfield begins the Section 1 tournament at Unity 4 at 5:30 against District 5 champion Bristol. Fairfield won the District 2 title Tuesday by defeating Black Rock, 10-0, behind pitcher Brittany Romero. Fairfield is coached by Jarry Rasmussen. Many of the Fairfield girls were on the 10-and-under team that won the state championship last year.
Darien, which is managed by Chris Lopiano, meets District 3 winner Seymour Thursday at Unity Field No. 2 at 5:30. Darien advanced by beating Ridgefield, 10-0, in Sundays District 1 championship game behind the pitching of Lexi Lopiano and a two-run home run by Cassidy Schiff. Darien also won the District 1 title last year.
Fairfield and Darien meet Friday at Unity Park at 5:50. The teams with the top two records in pool play advance to the Section 1 championship game on Wednesday, July 13. The Section 1 winner meets the Section 2 winner for the state championship in a best-of-three series beginning July 16 in Danbury.
