Fairfield Ludlowe Battles Back in Ninth for Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With one swing of the bat Wednesday the Fairfield Ludlowe baseball team showed that while it is largely inexperienced, it is ready to take on anyone in the conference.

Playing in his first varsity game, sophomore Mikey Arman laced a two-out RBI single down the right field line in the top of the ninth against Wilton. It capped a thrilling 5-4, come-from-behind opening day victory for the Falcons.

“I was down 0-2 in the count and I just kept grinding to try and find a hit for my team,” Arman said. “This is huge. Last year, I was down at the JV level, so I was just hoping to get some playing time. It’s great to have a big game in my first game.”

Ludlowe was held to just one hit through the first four innings by Wilton ace Paul Merolla. Ludlowe finally got the break it needed when Wilton first baseman Ryan Reuter dropped a pop-up in foul territory. The Falcons pounced for four runs on four hits in the inning to take the lead, with two runs coming on a double by Arman.

Wilton knotted the game at 4-4 in the sixth, but Victor D’Ascenzo came on and pitched three innings of no-hit relief. Arman stepped up with men on first and third and two out to deliver the go-ahead hit. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

“The back half of the game we got runners on base and made things happen. The first four innings are hopefully not what we’re all about,” Ludlowe manager Keith O’Rourke said. “We showed a lot of fight and determination today. We have a very young team, and I’m just happy with the way our group fought back against one of the top pitchers in the [conference].”

Ludlowe (1-0) hosts Berlin in its home opener Thursday at 4 p.m.
