The Fairfield Ludlowe/Warde Co-Op hockey team lost a heartbreaker in the opening round of the Division II state tournament. It took almost all of two overtimes to decide the game, but Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks' Dylan Balfore finally broke the stalemate with 1:51 remaining to send Fairfield home early, 2-1.
It was a frustrating night for eighth-ranked Fairfield, which took 47 shots on goal. Fairfields single goal came late in the third period from Chris Santello. Fairfield also had the advantage of playing a shorthanded Suffield team, but still could not put the game away. Fairfield goalkeeper Connor Frawley made 27 saves on the night.
Fairfield finishes the season at 9-12.
