Fairfield Football Teams Battle for Pride

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A lost football season and another of "what-could-have-been" mark the Thanksgiving Day showdown between Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde. The annual gridiron matchup between the cross-city rivals kicks off at 10 a.m. at Ludlowe's Taft Field.

Fairfled Warde (4-5) came into the 2011 season regarded as darkhorses - fitting for the Mustangs. Led by a breakout season from senior running back Devon Lofton, Warde nearly became the giant killers people thought they might be.

Warde had trouble holding onto leads all season, however, squandering second half advantages against some of the best teams in the conference. The Mustangs led at halftime against Darien, New Canaan and Staples. Warde even led New Canaan with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter of their week three showdown.

While Warde came close to tasting victory, it has been more of a slog for the Falcons. Ludlowe (0-9) is still searching for its first win of the season entering its final game. In nine games, the Falcons have been outscored by opponents 339-72 this season.

Ludlowe has not been able to score more than 14 points in any game so far. The closest the Falcons have gotten to a victory was a 6-0 loss to Harding (Bridgeport) in week four.

Warde won last year's holiday game 21-16 and holds a 9-7 edge all-time in Thanksgiving matchups over Ludlowe.
