FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball team lost its first game in the East Regional tournament at Bristol Monday, a 4-3 setback to Rhode Island. Fairfield finishes pool play 3-1, and advances to the single-elimination round Thursday.
Seeds still have to be determined for the single-elimination round. Maine and Rhode Island are each 2-1, and play Tuesday. Massachusetts is 1-2 and Vermont is 0-3.
Alice Nelson took the loss Tuesday for Fairfield, allowing four hits and two earned runs. She struck out four and walked two. Gabriella Natoli had two hits and scored two runs for Fairfield.
Fairfield scored in the first on an RBI groundout by Emma Houghton. Rhode Island tied it in the third, and took the lead with three in third. Three hits, two walks and two Fairfield errors fueled the Rhode Island rally.
Fairfield scored two runs in the fifth to get within 4-3. In the sixth, Mary Rose Finnegan walked and stole second and third. But Fairfield could not push the tying run home.
Fairfield managed just three hits, and also committed an uncharacteristic three errors. Natoli (.462), Sarah Cotto (.455) and Julia Wilson (.429) are hitting better than .400 in the tournament for Fairfield.
