Fairfield Author Signs New Book on Basketball

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Fairfield author Don Harrison will sign copies of his new book, “Hoops in Connecticut: The Nutmeg State’s Passion for Basketball,”  on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 1-4 p.m. at the new Fairfield University Bookstore.

The book is a compact history of Connecticut basketball that covers outstanding high school teams, college teams and the 33 state natives who have played in the NBA. There are interviews with many of the game's stars, including Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Famer Calvin Murphy (Norwalk), former NBA stars Charles Smith, Vin Baker, John Bagley, Wes Matthews and the late John Williamson. Harrison also talks to former Harlem Globetrotter Alvin Clinkscales, Johnny Egan, Chris Smith, Chuck Aleksinas, Tony Hanson, Frank "Porky" Vieira and coaches Dee Rowe, the late Fred Barakat, Joe Vancisin, Dave Bike, Bill Detrick and Harrison Taylor.

There is an emphasis on two local colleges, Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University, and the 1954-55 New England championship team from Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield.

The bookstore is at 1499 Post Road, the previous site of Border’s. Harrison wrote a similar book about baseball in Connecticut in 2009.
