Fairfield American Rolls in New England Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield American Little League All-Stars opened the defense of their New England Region title Friday with a 17-0 rout of Vermont. Fairfield will try to go to 2-0 Saturday when it plays Maine at 8 p.m. in Bristol.

Fairfield scored 10 runs in its first at bat of Friday's game, which was halted after 3 ½ innings. Fairfield added seven in the third. Pitchers Eddie Schwartz, Reed Szemplinski and Connor Lynch combined on a two-hitter for Fairfield.

Jack Oricoli slammed two home runs for the Americans, and Brendan Layne and Aidan Kudzy also hit homers. Fairfield posted 13 hits, including three by Oricoli and two each by Lane and Grant Carnemark. Layne and Kudzy had three RBIs each, and Brendan Flynn had two.

In the big first inning, the Americans swatted seven hits and took advantage of three Vermont errors. Kudzy's three-run blast highlighted the third inning.

Maine lost a 5-2 decision to New Hampshire in its opener. The Maine team is out of Yarmouth. Fairfield also plays Sunday at 5 vs. New Hampshire and Tuesday at 1 vs. Rhode Island.
