FAIRFIELD, Conn. Stop me if youve heard this one before: Fairfield American is headed to the Connecticut Little League championship. The leagues all-star team beat East Haven, 14-3, on Wednesday evening to win the Section 1 tournament. The 12-year-olds are now two wins from the league's second straight state title.
Fairfield American put up its double-digit run total with its usual power Wednesday. Brendan Bucher put his team on the board with a two-run home run in the second inning. Connor Lynch, Eddie Schwartz, Sean Gutierrez and Jack Oricoli followed with homers of their own.
Theres no fall-off, manager Kevin Flynn said of his lineup. All these kids have hit top three or four in their order all spring long.
American also added a trio of runs on the base paths in the third. A trio of walks loaded the bases, and Oricoli, Bucher and Philip Landis all came home on passed balls to score before Gutierrezs home run cleared the bases.
Starting pitcher Schwartz pitched four-and-a-third shutout innings before Flynn pulled him just to be safe. Oricoli and Brendan Layne gave up three runs combined in relief, but overall Flynn said he was pleased with his pitchers performance. Weve had some real clutch performances the last few games, he said.
Fairfield American will play Section 2 winner Glastonbury American in the state championship series this weekend. The two teams will play a best-of-three series Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Prospect to decide which town heads to the New England Regional tournament in August. Flynn said his team will be ready.
Were starting to gel, he said. As a team, were really starting to hit the ball well.
