FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A year after its magical run to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., Fairfield American is ready for another hack at history. American begins play in the state sectional tournament on Wednesday in Orange against East Haven at 7:30 p.m.
Fairfield American is the heavy favorite as defending New England champions and after bombarding their Fairfield rival, National, 26-12, in the District 2 finals. American went bonkers at the plate on Sunday, launching eight home runs and scoring 16 runs in the sixth inning alone.
State sectionals begin with a pool play of five games. The two teams with the best record after those five games will face off in the Section 1 finals. The winner of Section 1 will play the Section 2 tournament winner for the Connecticut state championship in a best of three series beginning July 30.
The Fairfield American 10-11 team also begins sectional play at Blackham School in Bridgeport on Wednesday. They take on Yalesville at 5:30 p.m.
Fairfields team includes Jon Annuzzi, Brendan Bucher, Grant Carnemark, Conner Devaney, Brendan Flynn, Sean Gutierrez, Aidan Kudzy, Brendan Layne, Connor Lynch, Jack Oricoli, Eddie Schwartz, Reed Szemplinski and Philip Vlandis. The team is managed by Kevin Flynn.
