FAIRFIELD, Conn. Back-to-back blowout wins have put Fairfield American in the driver's seat of the Little League New England Regional Tournament in Bristol, Conn.
American pummeled South Burlington, Vt., 17-1, Saturday and flexed its offensive muscle again Monday evening with a second straight mercy-rule win. Biagio Paoletta clocked a grand slam to highlight another offensive onslaught, as Fairfield cruised to a 15-2 victory over Scarborough, Maine.
Fairfield got to work early, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. American was able to take advantage of five Maine errors, plating a dozen unearned runs.
Matt Kubel faltered at first on the mound for American, allowing Maine to score twice in the bottom of the first. But the big lefty quickly recovered, going three strong innings.
Saturday's game against Vermont was tight through three innings, as Fairfield clung to a 3-1 lead. But Fairfield exploded in the top of the fourth, sending 19 batters to the plate while collecting 14 runs on 13 hits. Will Lucas led the offense with three hits and five RBIs, including a two-run home run.
Fairfield is now 3-0 in pool play and will be top seed in the semifinals with one more victory. American takes on Massachusetts champion Wellesley South Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Wednesday's game will be televised on New England Sports Network.
