Fairfield 9-10 Softball All-Stars Stay Alive In Sectional Tournament

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball team advanced to the championship round of the Section 1 tournament Monday with a 5-0 victory over Orange.

Kylee Holderied struck out 15 in a complete-game one-hitter to propel Fairfield, which will meet Seymour in the championship round. The teams meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Wallingford. Fairfield, which has one loss in the tournament, would need to beat Seymour twice to advance to the state championship round. If Fairfield wins Tuesday, the team would meet again Wednesday for the Section 1 title.

Fairfield is 5-0 in elimination games this summer. It won the District 2 tournament after falling into the losers’ bracket before rallying to win the title.

In Monday’s game, Fairfield struck first with first-inning singles to by Sarah Szuchman and Emma Romeo to grab a 1-0 lead. The girls continued to add to their lead and back the fine pitching of Holderied.

Fairfield lost to Orange, 4-3, in its first game of the tournament. It has bounced back with wins over Farmington and Easton-Redding before winning the rematch vs. Orange.

The victory over Easton-Redding showed Fairfield’s resiliency as it battled back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game at 6-6 and force extra innings. After falling behind 9-6 in the eighth, Fairfield rallied for four in the bottom of the inning, capped by Holderied’s steal of home. Three of Fairfield’s runs came with two outs.

Bridget Keary had three hits, including a triple. Szuchman, Haley Bivens, Serena Ta and Holderied were other hitting stars for Fairfield.
