With a sweep of South Windsor National on Saturday and Sunday, the Fairfield American 10-11-year-olds secured the league's third state championship of the season. Fairfield won 12-1 on Saturday and walked-off with a 6-5 victory on Sunday in New London. The 9-10 and 11-12 year-olds also won state championships this season.
The walk-off solo home run Sunday came off the bat of Sean Gutierrez with two outs in the bottom of the sixth with the game tied at five.
Fairfield finished the season with a 13-0 record.
"This team has a special chemistry that they just knew someone would come up big when it was needed," said coach Kevin Flynn. "It's been a fantastic season that ended with a spectacular finish."
"There's no better way to start your summer than with a state championship," Fynn added.
Eddy Schwartz, Brendan Flynn and Reed Szemplinski were the team's top pitchers. Gutierrez, Jack Oricoli and Connor Lynch served as closers.
Three players hit over .400 in All-Star play, led by Aiden Kudzy batting clean-up. Schwartz hit nine home runs to lead the team. He had 26 RBI, second only to Brendan Flynn's 27.
Fairfield was sparked by a seven-run third inning against South Windsor on Saturday. Brendan Bucher hit a three-RBI triple during the rally. On Sunday, Fairfield took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Schwartz, but fell behind in the second inning 3-2. After two more lead changes, the game was tied in the final inning when Gutierrez hit the home run.
"Every one of our boys contributed all season long and we had a number of come-from-behind wins," coach Flynn said.
