FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield American scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Wilton, 12-0, in the final pool play game for both teams in the Section 1 tournament for 10- and 11-year-old baseball players.
The game had little meaning for the teams. Both had already qualified for the Section 1 championship game, which will be played Wednesday at Blackham School in Bridgeport at 5:30 p.m.
Fairfield American finished pool play with a 4-0 mark, while Wilton finished 3-1. The winner of Wednesday's game advances to the state championship series beginning Saturday in Haddam.
Winning pitcher Matt Kubel and Will Lucas scored three runs apiece for Fairfield.
