FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield 9- and 10-year-old softball team captured the District 2 championship Saturday with a 5-4 victory over Trumbull. The win sends Fairfield into the Section 1 tournament beginning Wednesday.
Fairfield went 5-0 in the tournament. In its run to the title, Fairfield defeated Black Rock, 15-1; Trumbull, 3-0; Westport, 15-0, and Monroe, 11-6, before beating Trumbull in the championship game.

Fairfield opens the Section 1 tournament against District 5 champion Wallingford. Games will be played at Ellsworth Park in Bridgeport.
