The game was a preliminary contest between the two teams that are expected to contend for the gold medal. The teams could meet again next week in the medal round.
Knight’s goal in the second period gave Team USA 1-0 lead. Canada scored three goals in a 12-minute span in the third period. Meghan Agosta scored a power play goal 2:21 into the period, and Hayley Wickenheiser scored just 1:33 later. Agosta scored again with 5:05 to play.
Jessie Vetter scored with 2:15 remaining to trim the deficit to one goal, but Canada held on in the final two minutes.
Knight played for Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford. Fairfield's Julie Chu is also a member of Team USA.
It was Team USA’s first loss in the tournament. Its next game is scheduled for Feb. 17 in the semifinals. Canada has won three straight gold medals in women’s hockey at the Winter Olympics.
