3 Warde Runners Win League Titles

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Three runners from Fairfield Warde had impressive victories Tuesday at the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championships at Danbury High School.

Warde senior Harry Warnick won the 3,200, while Cate Allen (1,600) and Lia Joham (400) were victorious on the girls side. Fairfield Ludlowe did not have any individual champions. Warde’s girls finished seventh with 47 points, while Ludlowe was 10th with 19. Darien won the girls title with 115.

On the boys side, Warde (24) and Ludlowe (22.5) were 11th and 12th, respectively. Staples won with 147.5 points, ending Danbury’s 11-year reign atop the conference.

Warnick won the 3,200 in 9:26.14, the second fastest time in the state this spring. The Villanova-bound distance runner led wire-to-wire and won by a whopping 12 seconds. He opened up huge gap early and was never challenged. Tom Moore of Danbury took second, followed by Ridgefield’s Benjam O’Regan.

Warnick nearly made it a remarkable double. He took second in the 1,600 to Staples’ Henry Wynne, who won in 4:14.3. Warnick’s time of 4:16.94 is the third fastest time in the state this spring and was a six second drop from his previous best this year. Warnick pressed Wynne the entire way, and made a move toward the lead with about 300 meters remaining. Wynne responded, and Warnick stayed right on Wynne’s heels right up to the tape.

Allen, a sophomore, had a similar battle in her victory in the 1,600. She won in 5:12.88, her fastest time of the year. Greenwich’s Abby Markowitz took second in 5:12.95. The two runners waged a terrific battle in the final lap, with Allen holding off the Greenwich senior in the final 50 meters. Warde’s Lexi Hoadley finished fifth in 5:22.71.

Joham, a freshman, took the 400 in 57.98. Staples’ Tyler Scanlin finished second, and Greenwich’s Elizabeth Markowitz took third. Joham was also fifth in the 200.

Other notable performances by Warde girls included Caroline Keough’s sixth place finish in the 3,200, a third in the 4 x 400 relay with Allen, Sarah Collins, Lauren Levine and Joham, a seventh place finish in the 4 x 800 with Hoadley, Jillian Tallent, Jackie Wall and Keough, and field event points from Jennifer Bowers (seventh, shot put) and Jocie Thibault (fifth, discus).

For Ludlowe, Sydney Kay was fifth in the 100, Heather Moriarty took seventh in the 1,600, Olivia Auray and Alex Wykoff went 5-6 in the 100 hurdles and Wykoff was sixth in the 300 hurdles.
