Prof at Fairfield's SHU Named Best in State

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The state’s best professor works right here in Fairfield, according to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Sacred Heart University political science professor Gary Rose won the organization's Connecticut Professor of the Year award, one of just 27 professors to earn the honor across the country.

Rose joined Sacred Heart in 1982 and is chair of the Department of Government and Politics. He has published 10 books, most recently “Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics and the Maverick Tradition,” using Fairfield’s home districts as a microcosm of the country’s Congressional system.

The Carnegie Foundation and the council chose Rose out of more than 300 finalists from across the nation. The university attributes Rose’s honor to his “passion for introducing students to the political system and how it operates.”

“My inspiration comes from a firm belief that students can, if they so desire, make a profound difference in American politics,” Rose said in a statement. “I believe in the old axiom that ‘knowledge is power.’ So, in essence, my mission as a university professor is to objectively expand the political knowledge of my students so they in turn can participate effectively in the political process and help shape public policy.”
