The doctorate program, which is expected to launch for the fall 2014 semester, will also culminate in a Connecticut 093 certification for school superintendence. The program is interdisciplinary between the Sacred Heart’s Isabelle Farrington College of Education and the John F. Welch College of Business, a release said.
“Part of the impetus for creating this great new program was demand among graduates of the certificate of advanced study in educational leadership, and part of it was to capitalize on our fantastic faculty that teaches in the educational leadership program,” James Carl, dean of the College of Education, said in a statement. “We have a great team of expert educators that includes former school superintendents, former principals and others with up-to-date credentials and leadership skills who will be mentoring students.”
Michael Barbour, formerly of Detroit’s Wayne State University, was hired in July to head the new program as director of doctoral studies, to be followed soon by a new professor of educational leadership focused on quantitative research methods, the release said.
The degree plans to prepare candidates for leadership positions as school superintendents and in education management organizations. It will include three doctoral dissertation seminars to assist students through the process of completing their degree and certification.
“These seminars provide a seasoned professor to help students develop their dissertation chapters and ensure successful completion of the program. They serve as mentors in both research and writing,” Carl’s statement said. “This new doctoral program promises to build on our outstanding network of educational administrators in Connecticut and throughout the Northeast.”
