A team of six Stratfield fifth-graders: Bridget Keary, Maeve McManus, Claire Cherniske, Brodie Hopkinson, Blake Holroyd and Michael McAleese, came in second in their age group at the statewide competition last month. The group will now head to the World Finals at Michigan State University from May 22 to May 25 with their two parent-coaches, Stephanie Holroyd and Amy Keary.

Odyssey of the Mind is an extracurricular program where teams of up to seven students take part in academic competitions. Each team picks one of five problems and must use their creativity and teamwork to come up with a solution, without help from their parent-coaches.

The problem chosen by the Stratfield group was titled “ARTchitecture: The Musical.” The students needed to create a replica of a work of architecture built between 1000 and 1600 A.D. and then stage a two-song, choreographed performance in which two characters needed to locate lost works of art to incorporate into the structure. The Stratfield team focused their project on the Cathedral of Notre Dame, complete with singing and dancing gargoyles.

Stratfield sent two teams to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in 2011, including many siblings of this year’s competitors. Both teams placed in the top 11 in their age groups at the time.

The team is also accepting donations to help cover their costs for travel and registration for their trip to Michigan later this month. Those interested can contact Amy Keary at amykeary@gmail.com.
