Title, who said his first love is teaching, said he has accepted a tenure‐track position as an assistant professor of educational leadership, which he will begin in mid‐August at SHU, which has its campus in town.
Title became superintendent in July 2010 and made Fairfield his home with his family.
Previously, Title served as school superintendent in Bloomfield from 2002 to 2010. In 2010, he was named Connecticut’s Superintendent of the Year. He also served as assistant superintendent in Waterford from 1990 to 2002. Title was also assistant principal at Somers High School and a history teacher at East Granby High School. His career began as a history teacher at and Longmeadow, Mass., High School in 1979.
Last June, Title donated a kidney to his 26-year-old son, Russell, who has Alport Syndrome, a genetic condition, according to the Fairfield Citizen. His younger son, Jack, who also had Alport Syndrome, died in 2014 of kidney failure.
In his letter, Title said he had no timetable when he took the job, but that his family has endured a number of stressful and emotionally draining events over the past few years.
"The outpouring of support from this community has been incredible. The tremendous support from my professional colleagues and this Board is valued beyond measure," Title said. "The teachers and administrators in this district are truly remarkable. But even with all of this support, these personal challenges have compelled me to adjust the demands in my daily schedule."
Taking the job at SHU will allow him to return to his love of teaching, Title said.
"I find I get the greatest job satisfaction, even in my current position, when I am teaching adults. And now, Sacred Heart University has offered me a full‐time opportunity to teach aspiring school and district leaders and to also assist with the development of a doctoral and certification program for aspiring superintendents," he said.
